Goals of the Bachelor stage and learning strategies

 Introduction:

Faculty mission:-

  • Alexandria Faculty of Medicine is committed to provide the community with physicians who are competent in diagnosis and treatment of its health problems and who are applying professional ethics and caring for essential social values
  • The faculty is also aspiring to enrich medical sciences with scientific researches that participate in solving community problems and providing integrated medical care that cope with modern technologies through the University Hospitalsand all other kinds of services within the society.

Basic characteristics of the developed educational program for the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery:

  • Confirming that the content of the curriculum should be closely related to professional practice based on a number of qualifications that should be acquired by a student before graduation in order to be qualified for practicing his professionaccording to national and international commonrules and criteria in medicine and which copes with faculty mission and vision.
  • Facilitating early integration between what a student studies in the basic sciences and what he studies in the clinical ones and also between clinical sciences with each other over the educational years horizontally and vertically.
  • Specifying the contribution rate of every educational topic in the general content of the curriculum through integration between topics in modules representing organsof the human bodyand in the framework of practical and clinical applications of different medical sciences.
  • Concentrating on the refinement of students active learning skills and self learning.
  • Giving a chance for acquiring more clinical and communication skills between a student, colleagues and patients through clinical training form the first years of study and concentrating on the concepts of the values and ethics of the profession in addition to the curriculum of general communication skills which are related to medicine.
  • The avoidance of overloading in medical courses and giving a student a chance for acquiring additional skills in addition to general and transferable medical skills as provided in the quality control standards of high education.

It must be noted that developing medical learning is a permanent process and needs follow-up work in the future.

Objectives and Strategies

Objectives of the faculty in the Bachelor stage

The regulation of the bachelor stage in Alexandria Faculty of Medicine was defined  in a way, so that it can lead the Faculty of Medicine to the international position that we wish for.

The objectives of the faculty are summarized as follows:

  • Providing the society with special graduates who are qualified in the diagnosis and treatment of medical problems in the society, who have the ethics of the profession and who maintain the social traditions.
  • Preparing graduates who are practiced on focusing on the guarantee and quality of medical services in the first level of medical care.
  • Adapting doctors who are capable of taking part in scientific researches that are important in raising the health level of the society.
  • Developing the abilities of self and continuous learning of the graduates.

Educational philosophy

The objectives of the bachelor stage are achieved through the application of an educational philosophy that relies on the following principles:

  • Education is a lifelong process.
  • One is capable of self-learning through his personal efforts of reaching the knowledge resources, thinking of which and reacting therewith.
  • The staff member is not just a transmitter of knowledge and skills, but also he guides his students to reach the sources of knowledge. He should be their role model in facing different problems and being capable of solving it in the light of his acquired experiences under the concept of leadership to the optimum.

Teaching methods and its strategy

In order to achieve the goals and to apply the strategic educational philosophy, the faculty has the following methodologies for teaching in the Bachelor stage:

  • Self-learning strategies by using different sources of knowledge (books, periodicals, computers, internet, etc.)
  • Different teaching strategies for the student to gain the information, skills and orientations like: developed lectures, discussions, practical training, workgroups, and seminars..
  • The strategy of the integration between different medical sciences and specializations horizontally and vertically creates the interconnection between the basic sciences and its clinical and practical applications.
  • The strategy of the early training on how to solve medical problems.
  • The continuous objective evaluation.
