OUR SERVICES

ELU provides services related to TEL, in particular we provide and support the Learning and Teaching Online activities and virtual learning environment to all Students, Academic staff and all Medical staff in AUFM.
ELU concentrates on the development of high quality web-based teaching content: ‘open learning’ resources, and on developing teaching materials that will help students achieve a smooth transition from one educational level to another through the various levels of higher education.

ELU has developed a number of interactive e-learning packages. These include:

  • Learning Management System (LMS)

Moodle stands for:

Modular
Object
Oriented
Dynamic
Learning
Environment.

It is an open source Course Management System (CMS) also known as a Learning Management System (LMS) or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). It is developed by Martin Dougiamas to help educators create online courses with a focus on interaction and collaborative construction of content. It has become very popular among educators around the world as a tool for creating online dynamic websites for students.

The focus of Moodle is giving Educators the best tools to manage and promote learning but there are many other ways to use Moodle.

  1. Moodle has features that allow it to scale to very large deployments and hundreds of thousands of students.
  2. Many institutions use it as their platform to conduct fully online courses, while some use it simply to argument face-to-face courses (blended learning).
  3. Moodle has many activity modules such as forums, databases and wikis, which are very useful. They are used to build richly collaborative communities of learning around a certain subject matter. Others are used as a way to deliver content to students and assess learning using assignments or quizzes.

Moodle has many features expected from an e-learning platform, plus some original innovations (like its filtering system). Moodle is very similar to a learning management system, but it has many more standard features. Moodle can be used in many types of environments such as in education, training and development, and business settings.

Developers can readily extend Moodle‘s modular construction by creating plugins for specific new functionality. Moodle‘s infrastructure supports many types of plug-ins:

  • Activities (including word and math games)
  • Resource types
  • Question Types (MCQs, true and false, fill in the blank, etc.)
  • Graphical Themes
  • Authentication Methods (requires user name and password accessibility)
  • Enrollment Methods
  • Content Filters

Many freely-available third-party Moodle plugins make use of this infrastructure.

  • Surveys

Survey Monkey is an easy-to-use tool for the creation of online surveys. It’s easy to use and very flexible—especially when creating questions and accessing survey results. Its primary strength is its intuitive Web interface, which makes it easy for even non-technical users to create surveys and export collected data. It has advanced features, like the ability to branch questions based on response and exporting to different formats.

Survey Monkey also helps get people to the surveys. The user can create email lists with custom invitations. Again, the interface is easy to use and allows users to either add names and addresses by hand or import them from a text file.

Be assured that e-Learning is not a silver bullet. Refrain yourself from using e-Learning for every training/learning opportunity. There is a place for e-Learning, but it is not appropriate in every circumstance.
